World of Warcraft is one of the most brilliant, well-though, balanced, well-designed and popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG).
The game was developed by the famous company Blizzard Entertainment, and was officially launched in November of 2004 for the USA, and several months later for Europe and Asian countries.

As of October 2010 the game had over 12 million subscribers (the number is huge, isn't it?) which is a record reflected in The Guinness Book of Records, and about 360 servers divided into 2 factions (Alliance and Horde).
World of Warcraft is often abbreviated and referred to as WoW.
Where, when and who
World of Warcraft is set in a fantasy world. In fact the game is a MMORPG continuation of the Blizzard's "Warcraft" series. The action of World of Warcraft takes places on planet Azeroth, time-wise about 4 years after the events at the conclusion of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.
Who - the universe of World of Warcraft is inhabited of various predominantly fantasy beings - gryphons, dragons, and elves, gnomes, flying and prancing pets, a bit of others - vampires, zombies, undead, and a bit of humans - paladins, warriors. The diversity is large and entertaining.
World of Warcraft subscription
Wow is a subscription based game, which means a player has to pay a monthly fee to be able to access and play the character on his or her wow account. One can pay for 1 month, 3 or 6 months, or use physical time cards that offer varying subscription periods. 1 month of play costs about $10 USD (or 10 Euro).
World of Warcraft Characters
A player can create and play with up to 10 character in one wow realm (server) and up to 50 toons on 1 account. Only 1 character can be played at a time. I.e. one won't be able to launch the game client several time, use the credentials from 1 same account to login with different characters.
Basically a player is able to test almost any race and class combination without a need in a new account.
Races in World of Warcraft
The choice in this regard is abundant as well - there are 12 different races with different look and story to choose from. Basically any taste can be satisfied here, you can play for the traditional humans, and brutal orcs.
All races available in game are divided into 2 factions - the Alliance (Humans, Dwarves, Draenei, Gnomes, Night Elves, Worgen, High Elves) and
the Horde (Orcs, Forsaken, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves, Goblins, Ogres).
The factions are in a constant conflict with each other, and with external threats that give no preference to any of the factions.

Classes in World of Warcraft
There are 10 classes available in the game. A character of a race can choose a specific class which will determine the character's abilities and combat styles and techniques.
The World of Warcraft classes are: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior.
However, there are some limitations class selection depending on the faction. For example, a representative of the Horde cannot choose the class of Paladins; Paladins can be only those from the Alliance.
What to do in game
Any player determines the purpose for playing himself / herself. The Wow universe is large and diverse, one may engage in combat with other players (PvP), including arena fights and duels, explore the world, do quests and assignments, achieve new levels and get access to new gear and abilities, fight against NPC characters including the toughest bosses (PvE), explore and master a profession, engage in trade and role-playing.
Professions
Besides killing NPC and leveling the character, player can also engage in a range of professional occupations. Professions basically mean collecting resources with the purpose of crafting / modification of items for personal use or for trade.
There are basic - Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring, Enchanting, Jewelcrafting, Inscription; collecting - Mining, Skinning, Herbalism; and supplementary professions - Cooking, Fishing, First aid, Archaeology.
Since a wow character can choose only 2 professions, it makes sense to do a better research on this topic to most efficiently combine the professions and benefit from them at the maximum.
Realms
Taking into consideration the number of players and technical limitations, it is impossible to allow all the millions of players to share one same game world simultaneously. It would simply be impossible to display the huge number of characters on players' monitors. Which is why World of Warcraft uses realms.
A realm represents a full copy of the in game world hosted on a webserver. Realm is able to host several thousand of people simultaneously playing and interacting with one another.
Wow realms (in other games they are usually called "servers") are also divided from the geographical / linguistic point of view, allowing different communities play together. When a players set up their Wow account, they will to choose on which server (realm) to play.

Also realms are divided based on the character of play into PvP, PvE, RP (role-playing) PvP and RP realms.
PvP
For some players PvP is what makes a game worth the time. It is always top fun to contend against people and human mind and skills. On PvP realms a player of a faction can be aggressed by a player of the other faction in any area that is not the factional area. On such wow servers one basically should be always aware of the potential danger when exploring the world.
PvP in Wow is also fairly well balanced, so whatever toon and class one chooses, he or she can successfully defend and attack. The outcome of a fight would rather depend on skills, experience and knowledge of the counterpart's weaknesses and advantages.
PvE
What World of Warcraft is also exceptional when it comes to PvE, to the story and the actions that lay in this domain. PvE raids against bosses are a real super fun, offer a lot of excitement and require team work and good and well-thought tactics.
RP
Role playing means a player makes his or her toon a part of the in game world and more strict role behavior is required when playing on a RP realm. In terms of game mechanics, RP realms do not differ from the above-mentioned 2 types.
Expansions
After the game's launch in 2004, World of Warcraft evolved and was modified. The modifications include not only changing the game balance and some aspect of its mechanics, but also new content additions which is natural as a game like Wow cannot remain the same all the time as any amount of content gets explored and to some extend loses the attractiveness.
Smaller changes to the game are made through patches. And large pieces of changes are introduced through expansions.
Thus, the game had the following extensions: The Burning Crusade (2005), Wrath of the Lich King (2007), Cataclysm (2009). The next planned addition is Mists of Pandaria.
